What is “Interior Construction”?

Interior construction… what is it, really? Wait, let’s ask a different question.

Have you ever walked into a building and wondered how all of its interior features happened or came to be?

Let’s say you visited the Duomo in Florence. An architectural wonder of its time, the Duomo took almost 200 years to complete, and defied some of the era’s current practices in Gothic architecture, since Italians considered the popular germanic buttresses of that time an eyesore. Instead, Neri di Fioravanti’s construction team (yes, they had them in the middle ages) fashioned the Duomo’s massive dome out of an intricate process of brickwork and lead-iron glazed splices, among other techniques which architects have not been able to dissect. Somehow, the massive Duomo stands as a testament to medieval engineering wonders… and of course, the birth of the period known as the Renaissance.

At the time of the Renaissance, the interior construction team of these rule-defying Italian architects made what was seemingly impossible, possible. This quality of introducing new, innovative engineering methods so that certain designs and interiors are made possible is what modern interior construction is all about — and what we in our company take pride in.

Interior construction, defined, is the work rendered by interior architects and engineers, in connection with the construction of a building’s interiors. It is a collaborative practice between architect, interior designer, and the construction team comprised of (in HNL’s case) a lead engineer and the fit-out team. The term “interior construction” is a general term used to describe building interiors and the features related to it as a space is fit-out for human use.

In our business — like the master artisans, craftsmen and engineers of the Duomo — interior construction work is what makes interior design possible. You can consider your interior designer to be the visionary for your desired completed interiors, and your interior construction team are the engineers that make it all possible. Interior construction work is implemented through a team of specialized individuals, depending on the work needed.

With any project, HNL runs project logistics with you, including cost-effective phasing of a project. We as a company are specialized, in that we spearhead and deploy crews from within our team, as opposed to hiring contractuals. Why? Simply because it makes the rendering of our projects to you more efficient, and yes, respectful of your resources and time constraints. When we as Project Managers have the control over meeting your tightest deadlines, we are able to hopefully establish long-term client relationships (as evidenced by a majority of our construction work being done with repeat clients).

Except you can be sure your project won’t take 200 years to complete!
